That Day - Manushya Puthiran

“What were you up to
this same day last year?”
She queried,
As she secretly read through
my last year’s
personal diary

That I had left
a particular day alone
blank
confused her

“On that blank day
Were you falling in love
With a new person?
Were you lying unconscious
On a treatment table?
Were you running away
From something?
Did you stand shivering
facing a betrayal?
Were you following a funeral procession
With a tumultuous heart?
Were you staring at
An unending stretch of rain
Like you are doing now?
Were you sobbing over
Being given up by someone?”
She kept on enquiring.

Responding, I faltered:
“Dear
I left that day blank
So that
You might come and fill it”
